Dental Bridges in Maidstone, Kent

Bridges can help restore the look and function of teeth for those with missing teeth.

When spaces in the gums are left empty, surrounding teeth can move and cause changes to the bite as well as other serious issues.

Whatever the extent of the damage, a quality bridge could hold the key to the confident smile you’ve been dreaming of.

What are Dental Bridges?

If you have one or more missing teeth, bridges fill in the gap with artificial teeth. Dental bridges are typically made out of crowns on either side of the missing tooth with false teeth that are cemented in place filling the gap in the middle.

Unlike dentures, these are not a full set of removable false teeth. They are usually constructed from a metal base, covered by porcelain and shaded to match your natural teeth.

How many Teeth can Bridges Hold?

A dental bridge can replace anywhere from one to four teeth, depending on the patient’s needs, with the most common replacements being for one to two teeth.

The greater the number of missing teeth, the more crowns needed to support the bridge and the less stable the bridge tends to be. Dentists use implants to provide additional support for bridges that replace a large number of teeth or for patients with weaker teeth that cannot adequately support the bridge.

What Types of Dental Bridges are Available?

Traditional Bridges – this is the most common type of bridge, with crowns placed on either side of the missing teeth and pontics (false teeth) in between. It is made out of porcelain fused with metal or ceramics.

Cantilever Bridges – this proves useful if you have a tooth on only one side of your missing teeth. The pontic is fitted into the gap and then anchored with the remaining tooth on one side. These are used infrequently due to the potential damage to your natural teeth.

Maryland Bridges – this consists of a pontic that is supported by a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the adjacent teeth, rather than supported by crowns. This is suitable for those with missing front teeth.

Implant-supported Bridges – this bridge is similar to a traditional bridge. However, they do not rely on natural teeth for support. Instead of the bridge being cemented in place to the teeth, it is held in place by implants.
